SME IT Tax Breaks Due To End
Small businesses are being urged to make the most of tax breaks on the purchase of IT equipment which is due to end on 31 March 2004. At present firms are able to claim a 100 per cent tax rebate on all IT equipment bought within the year of original purchase. This means that should a company buy a new computer worth £500, they would be able to deduct £500 from the final reported profit for that particular tax year, thus reducing overall tax liability. Businesses are eligible for these tax breaks if they have a turnover below £5.6 million or have fewer than 50 employees. Tax deductions can be claimed on a range of ICT products, such as hardware, software, internet capable mobile phones and website development; yet there is now less than one month for businesses to benefit. The tax break has already been extended by the Chancellor on a previous occasion and so it is unlikely it will be repeated.
