Windows Source Code Leak

In what has turned out to be a bad week for Microsoft it's now emerged that part of the source code for Windows NT and Windows 2000 has appeared on the Internet.  Although only a small portion of the source code is involved the fear now is that the 'outing' of the code will allow hackers to find new ways to attack PCs.

Microsoft are playing down the leak but there has clearly been a serious breach of the normally obsessive security that surrounds the Windows code.

Aware of all the bad publicity recent security alerts have generated Microsoft are offering to send users a Free CD containing all of their security updates since Oct 2003. You can order yours HERE.

New Windows Security Alert

Microsoft have issued a new security alert identifying a potential flaw in its Windows operating system which could allow hackers to gain access to files on your PC. The advice to users is to download the patch from the Microsoft web site. You can check for any updates you need here. Note this latest security update does not affect Windows 95 or Windows 98 users.

Arise Sir Bill . . . !

Bill Gates, the multi-billionaire CEO of software giant Microsoft is to receive an honoury knighthood from Her Majesty the Queen. The award, believed to have been recommended by the Chancellor Gordon Brown, is for services to Global Enterprise.

Virus Alert

W32.Novarg.A@mm, also known as the My Doom  virus is a mass-mailing worm that arrives as an attachment with the file extension .bat, .cmd, .exe, .pif, .scr, or .zip.

When a computer is infected, the worm will set up a backdoor into the system by opening TCP ports 3127 through 3198, which can potentially allow an attacker to connect to the computer and use it as a proxy to gain access to its network resources. In addition, the backdoor can download and execute arbitrary files.

You can check if you already have the virus by downloading and running this program from Microsoft.

Please read the PC Doctor+ Guide 1 for advice on how to protect your PC from virus attack.

New Look - New Options

Welcome to the new look web site.

If you're wondering why we've made the changes then the answer is that the old site was simply getting too large.

Some of the facilities of the old site have been moved to new independent sites so that the ARRIVAL site can concentrate on the computer side of things.

We still have our own sections for Business Users and Home Users but much of the 'best of the web' content has been moved to a new site DowntownUK as we wanted to develop the regional portal idea further.

Reduce the Junk Mail Through Your Letterbox

The Mailing Preference Service (MPS) is a free service set up 20 years ago and funded by the direct mail industry to enable consumers to have their names and home addresses in the UK removed from or added to lists used by the industry. It is actively supported by the Royal Mail and all directly involved trade associations and fully supported by the Office of the Information Commissioner.

The MPS Consumer File is a list of names and addresses of consumers who have told the MPS they wish to limit the amount of direct mail they receive. The use of the Consumer File by list-owners and users is a requirement of the British Code of Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing administered by the Advertising Standards Authority. It is also a condition under the Code of Practice of the Direct Marketing Association.

The MPS can remove your name from up to 95% of Direct Mail lists. It will not stop mail that has been sent from overseas, un-addressed material or mail addressed to The Occupier. You can expect to continue to receive mailings from companies with whom you have done business in the past. You may also receive mailings from small, local companies. If you wish these mailings to be stopped, you must notify these companies directly. It will take up to 4 months for the Service to have full effect although you should notice a reduction of the mail during this period.

Registering with the MPS is FREE and can be done on http://www.mpsonline.org.uk. The whole process takes 3 or 4 minutes.

Make Your Computer Work For A Living By Saving You Money

Computers are at their best when they are performing the laborious tasks that we would like to perform ourselves if only we had the time. For example, there are now a plethora of companies selling gas and electricity, mobile phones, insurance, mortgages and the more expensive retail items when we really should shop around. So how do you know that you're getting the best deal? Well fortunately other people have had the same thoughts and now run very successful companies on the Internet to basically do the work for you. How does the idea of saving 25% on the price of a new car sound to you?

Our sister site downtownUK has been doing a bit of research on this whole area and the savings can be quite staggering! Take a look at the guide they produced - HERE.

Try It Free for 30 Days

Child Locate is one of those neat ideas that is so obvious you wonder why no one had thought of it before. How many times have you wished you knew exactly where a child was but pulled back from actually calling their mobile in fear of being accused of being over-protective.

Child Locate has the answer. It uses the mobile network transmitters to triangulate the position of your child's mobile. Then it relays the information back to you either as a text message or as a position on a street map displayed on the web. They're currently running an offer where you can try the service for free for 30 days.

CD-WOW have been in the news recently basically for under-cutting just about everyone else who sells CDs and DVDs.

The fact is that we in the UK still seem to be paying more for our CDs than anyone else. What's bad for their competitors though is good for us so if you're thinking of buying a CD or DVD in the near future then best check out this site first as significant savings can be made.
